Romanian Scholars in World War I
Abstract - Symposia paper
For Romania, the First World War had a special significance. It meant immense damage and immeasurable destruction, but it also meant a turning point, marked at the end of the war by the birth of Greater Romania from the union of a historical province inhabited by Romanians.
During the war, scholar fields navigated through multiple challenges, changes, and consequences. Education has been partially or totally interrupted in places of violent conflict. Universities have been affected – by destroyed infrastructure and by the loss of teachers and students who have left the places of conflict or who have participated in the war. Research and scientific publications have been strongly affected.
In this violent and disturbed period, Romanian scholars played an important role.
The purpose of the communication is to identify and analyse the activity of Romanian scholars during the First World War in the context of the events that took place.
It explores how Romanian scientific personalities influenced the events and decisions of that era, but also how the war influenced their entire discourse. It highlights the prodigious work of scholars and leaders who navigated the challenges and changes brought about by World War I, contributing to Romania's history during that stormy period.
All the arguments put forward demonstrate that the war has a profound impact on education and the scholar environment, and the consequences are felt in the long term. It is essential to pay attention to these issues and find solutions to support scholar communities affected by any conflict.
