You'll find it easy to get around Wellington. The downtown area is compact so restaurants, cafes, hotels, attractions and transport are all within walking distance.
Walking
Wellington is a city best explored on foot, with a myriad of walkways, tracks and trails ranging from day hikes with picturesque views to wanders through historic precincts full of hidden gems.
The central city is only two kilometres in diameter, meaning you can walk from one side to the other in under 30 minutes.
Lambton Quay, Willis Street, Manners Street and Courtenay Place form what is known locally as the Golden Mile. Most of the city's retail shops, restaurants, cafes and bars are located along the Golden Mile or within close proximity.
Public Transport
Wellington has an excellect public transport system which is well used by locals.
Metlink has an easy to use journey planner to help you get anywhere within the Wellington region using buses, trains or ferries.
The Wellington Cable Car is also a form of public transport. It leaves from downtown Wellington to the leafy, village-like suburb of Kelburn. At the top of the Cable Car, you can find some of the best views of Wellington.
